Is Van Branding Putting Your Business at Risk? What New Research Reveals About Theft and Security

For many tradespeople and small business owners, a branded van is more than just a set of wheels - it’s a mobile advert and a statement of professionalism. But new research suggests that showcasing your business on your vehicle could also make it a target for thieves.

A recent survey by Tempcover found that more than half of UK van owners (54%) believe their branding has made them a target for theft or vandalism. The findings highlight a growing tension between marketing visibility and vehicle security - an important consideration for anyone investing in a van lease.

The Power, and Price, of Visibility

Branding a van is often seen as a smart business move. Nearly half (47%) of van owners fully brand their vehicles to boost trust and attract new customers, while a further 25% opt for partial branding such as decals or smaller logos.

It’s easy to see why: 50% of owners say branding helps build a professional image, and almost as many (48%) use it to attract new business and boost local awareness. For others, it’s about standing out from competitors (28%) or ensuring potential customers can easily find them (22%).

However, with an average spend of £751–£1,000 on branding - and some businesses investing over £3,000 - the financial commitment is significant. The last thing any owner wants is for that investment to increase the risk of crime.

When Standing Out Can Backfire

According to the study, 42% of van owners have removed their branding due to theft or vandalism concerns, while a further 14% are considering doing the same. Many believe that large, prominent branding can make their vans more noticeable to opportunistic thieves, with 70% saying they think the size and visibility of branding directly impacts risk levels.

Still, 39% reported no security incidents, showing that the right precautions can make a difference.

Keeping Branded Vans Safe

If you’re leasing a van for your business, branding can still be a valuable marketing tool, but it pays to be proactive about protection.

Experts recommend the following steps to reduce your risk:

· Park smart: Always choose well-lit, secure areas and avoid leaving tools or equipment inside overnight.

· Add extra security: Steering locks, alarm systems, and GPS trackers can all help deter thieves.

· Consider your branding design: Avoid advertising expensive tools or equipment on your livery.

· Review your insurance options: Whether you use a temporary policy or a full-term business cover, make sure you’re protected against theft and damage.

As Claire Wills-McKissick from Tempcover explains:

“A van is often the backbone of a business, so it’s vital to keep it secure. While eye-catching designs can help attract new customers, they can also draw unwanted attention. Simple steps can go a long way in reducing risk.”

Final Thoughts

Branding your van can be one of the best ways to grow your business and build trust but visibility comes with responsibility. As van leasing specialists, we always advise customers to consider both the marketing and security implications before committing to a branded design.

The takeaway? Brand smart, protect smarter.
