Why Tailgating Puts Drivers at Risk, And How to Stay Safe
Recent research by Startline Motor Finance has revealed that one in three drivers admit to tailgating - driving too closely behind the car in front. While some may see it as a way to “encourage” other motorists to move over, the reality is that tailgating is dangerous, intimidating, and, in many cases, illegal.
The impact of tailgating on the road
The study highlights some worrying trends:
- 10% of drivers admit they tailgate deliberately to pressure the car in front to move over.
- 9% of drivers don’t know the two-second rule, a simple way to estimate a safe following distance.
- 19% of motorists report feeling anxious when being tailgated.
- 12% have been involved in an accident or near-miss because of tailgating.
It’s not just about inconvenience. Tailgating has serious consequences. National Highways data shows that more than 140 people are killed or seriously injured every year in tailgating-related incidents on England’s motorways and major A-roads. In fact, it’s a factor in one in eight collisions on the strategic road network.
The law on tailgating
Tailgating falls under the offence of careless driving. Drivers caught can face:
- A £100 fine and three penalty points.
- In severe cases, a driving ban or even imprisonment if a serious collision occurs.
In short: driving too closely isn’t just unsafe, it could also cost you your licence.
Safe driving tips: the two-second rule
National Highways recommends leaving at least a two-second gap between your vehicle and the one in front on dry roads. This should be doubled to four seconds in wet conditions.
Think of it this way: most people wouldn’t stand right on someone’s heels in a queue, so why do it at 70mph? A small act of patience and respect on the road could save lives.
A safer road for everyone
While the findings are concerning, it’s encouraging to note that 65% of drivers say they always leave an appropriate gap. That means most motorists are driving responsibly and doing their part to keep roads safer.
